Series background & context

The Detective Loxley Nottinghamshire books follow Rob Loxley, a Nottinghamshire detective who is good at the job but never fully trusted. He has a difficult past, other officers know it, and the series starts with him already carrying that weight. In In Bad Faith, a body found in Sherwood Forest pulls him into a hunt for a killer using people as living targets. From the outset, Rob is fighting the case and the whispers around him.

Nothing comes easy for Rob.

A lot of the series' identity comes from place. Fraine uses Sherwood Forest, Nottingham streets, and former mining communities not just as backdrop but as pressure points. The landscape can feel wide open one moment and claustrophobic the next. Even when Rob is working major crimes, there is a strong sense of local history, local grudges, and people who know more than they say. The setting gives the books a rough, lived-in feel that suits the cases.

Rob is not written as a lone genius cut off from everyone else. His partnership with Scarlett gives the series a human center, and the wider team matters too. There is friction, loyalty, and the kind of tired humor you get from detectives under strain. At the same time, anti-corruption pressure and Rob's own history keep threatening to knock him sideways. That ongoing tension is a big part of why these books work best in order, because the personal fallout does not simply reset at the end of each case.

The crimes themselves are dark even by crime-thriller standards. Hell To Pay moves into dismemberment killings, vulnerable women, and criminal networks that can turn a murder inquiry into something much bigger. Across the series, the danger is rarely confined to one victim or one crime scene. Fraine likes cases that spread into the community and leave everyone on edge, from witnesses and officers to the people stuck living with the fallout. There is always the feeling that one bad act is connected to something older and uglier.

There is also a useful way into Rob's world before book one. The Doll Killer is a prequel novella that overlaps with the earlier Jon Pilgrim timeline and helps explain part of the larger police world around Nottingham. You do not need it first, but it adds extra depth to what comes later.

What you get, then, is a grounded but high-pressure police series. The books are brisk, grim, and strongly tied to Nottinghamshire. If you like detectives who are capable but not comfortable, cases that connect to gangland and corruption, and a setting that feels rough at the edges, this is probably the AL Fraine series to try first.
