Later books widen the canvas with suspicious deaths, celebrity connections, missing prison officers, and old resentments that refuse to stay buried. The plots move briskly, but they stay grounded in patient police work, interviews, crossed wires, and the slow business of figuring out who is lying.

The supporting cast helps give the series its backbone. DS Chris West is an important part of Clare's working life, and senior officers, especially DCI Alastair Gibson, add pressure, friction, and the occasional lifeline. Todd is good at showing how a team works under stress, when personalities matter almost as much as evidence. The books keep one eye on office politics and personal strain, but they never let those threads swamp the investigation.

What links the series from book to book is Clare herself. She is capable, stubborn, and not especially interested in making life easy for herself. The job leaves marks, and Todd does not ignore that, but she also avoids turning every case into a lesson about damage. Clare keeps going, keeps asking questions, and keeps pushing past easy answers.
