Detective Bobby Mac Thriller Books in Order

At the center of this series is Denver detective Robert Macaulay, better known as Bobby Mac. He is not built like a glossy thriller hero. Before the first book even begins, he has already lost a partner, lost a leg in the line of duty, and lost his wife to cancer. That history matters because these books never treat him like a blank-slate cop. He works cases while carrying real grief, anger, and doubt, and that gives the series its weight.

Black Beast starts with a brutal double murder in Denver's Sloan's Lake area. On the surface, Bobby Mac is doing what detectives do: working a homicide, following leads, and trying to make sense of a killing that feels far worse than ordinary street violence. But Guthrie adds another layer. As the case deepens, Bobby Mac begins to learn that his family history is tied to the old Clan MacAulay, a line of protectors locked in a long fight against evil. That family thread is what gives the series its supernatural side.

The second book, Lost, takes him out of Denver and into the forests and mountain country of northern Idaho after his brother Jax, the police chief in Rocky Gap, asks for help. There are gruesome murders, an abducted eleven-year-old girl, and a setting that feels much more isolated than the city streets of book one. The move matters. In Idaho, the series leans harder into suspense and pursuit, and the bond between the brothers becomes just as important as the investigation itself.

Reckoning brings Bobby Mac back to Denver, but not back to safety. A serial killer known as the Judas Killer has the city on edge, and Mac joins the task force trying to stop him. By this point the books have built a continuing emotional story as well as a mystery plot. Old losses stay old, but they do not stay quiet, and the things Bobby Mac has learned about his family are no longer easy to set aside.

These are police thrillers first, but they are not only police thrillers.

What sets the series apart is the way it keeps one foot in detective fiction and one foot in the uncanny. The procedural side is real: crime scenes, interviews, inter-agency work, exhausted cops trying to get ahead of the next body. The paranormal side never feels like a separate genre pasted on top. Instead, it grows out of Bobby Mac's ancestry, his faith, and the question running through all three books: what does a decent person do when the darkness in front of him stops making ordinary sense?

If you like gritty mysteries with damaged protagonists, strong family stakes, and just enough supernatural tension to make things strange, this series is an easy fit. Read it in order if you can. The cases stand on their own, but Bobby Mac's personal story hits harder when you watch it build from Black Beast to Lost to Reckoning.
