Series background & context
Demon Chaser is one of Charlene Hartnady's earlier connected paranormal series, and it leans a little more urban fantasy than some of her later romance-first worlds. The main idea is that Demon Chasers are sworn to protect humanity, keep the peace, and make sure ordinary people do not learn the truth about demons and other dangerous supernatural beings.
That gives the books a useful built-in structure. There is always some mix of secrecy, investigation, species politics, and forbidden attraction. The heroes and heroines are not just falling in love. They are also navigating rules that are supposed to keep the hidden world from tipping into chaos.
The first novel, Omega, introduces that tone well. A rescue becomes an awakening, buried identity comes into play, and one personal story opens a door into the larger supernatural order. Later books keep expanding on that framework with alpha wolves, hybrids, skins, and other beings whose loyalties are not always easy to read.
Because of that variety, the series feels broader than the title might suggest. It is not only one kind of shifter story. It is a mixed paranormal world with demon politics, wolf pack pressure, unusual bloodlines, and a formal agency trying to hold everything together.
The romance is still a major draw, of course. Hartnady writes strong physical attraction and protective heroes here too. But Demon Chaser also has more mystery energy than some of her dragon and vampire books, especially when cases, disappearances, or violent threats push the plots forward.
If you enjoy paranormal romance with an undercover, rule-bound, supernatural enforcement angle, Demon Chaser is a good fit. It is an interesting early look at Hartnady building the kind of connected paranormal system she would later expand in other series.
