Series background & context

The Chosen is one of Charlene Hartnady's key gateway series because it introduces so much of the wider world that later books build on. The premise begins with a choosing ceremony in Sweetwater, where vampire kings claim human brides, but the series quickly grows beyond that into something bigger and more tangled.

The first book, Chosen by the Vampire Kings, sets the tone. Human women are expected to participate in an old tradition, vampire royalty expects obedience, and the heroine is not thrilled by any of it. That pushback is important. Hartnady's world may run on old species customs, but her heroines tend to challenge the terms.

As the series continues, the scope widens. Wolves, vampires, and elves all have claims, grudges, and reasons to fear what comes next. Some books stay close to courts and heirs. Others move into enemy territory, abductions, uneasy alliances, and forbidden attraction across species lines. Stolen by the Alpha Wolf and Wanted By The Elven King show just how far the world can stretch while still feeling tied to the same central conflict.

That conflict is not only romantic. It is political. Who gets to rule matters. Who gets heirs matters. Whether different supernatural groups can coexist without bloodshed matters. The romances give the books their emotional center, but the ongoing tension between species is what makes the series worth following from one installment to the next.

Even when each book shifts to a new couple, previous events keep echoing. Old decisions create new vulnerabilities. Former enemies become uneasy allies. A private relationship can suddenly have public consequences.

If you want to understand Hartnady's broader paranormal universe, The Chosen is one of the best places to begin. It has vampire kings, wolf alphas, elven politics, and a shared-world energy that rewards reading in order.
