The protagonist is suddenly pushed into amateur sleuthing, and the books start asking not just who belongs in this town, but what is really going on inside it.

That shift gives the trilogy a useful shape. The first book sets the mood and the loneliness. The second turns conflict personal. The third opens the door to investigation.
