Deborah Masson Books in Order

Deborah Masson was born and bred in Aberdeen, Scotland, and that city sits at the heart of her fiction. Before her novels found readers, she worked a whole run of jobs, including secretarial work, marketing, reporting for Aberdeen's free newspaper, and a stint as a postie. It was not a straight line into publishing, which is part of what makes her story feel so grounded.

She didn't arrive at crime writing through a neat plan.

Writing had been in the background for years. She has spoken about wanting to write from an early age, but confidence took time. Like a lot of people, she got on with work, family, and ordinary life before deciding to take that ambition seriously.

Crime fiction was always the constant. After becoming a mother, she started writing short stories and flash fiction while her daughter napped, then pushed herself further after her son was born by taking online courses with the Professional Writing Academy and Faber Academy. Those courses helped her move from wanting to write to actually finishing a novel.

That novel was Hold Your Tongue. Masson wrote it over three to four years while raising two small children, and it became her debut as well as the first book in the DI Eve Hunter series. In 2020 it won the Bloody Scotland Crime Debut of the Year award, a strong early marker that she had arrived with something readers were ready for.

The DI Eve Hunter books, including Hold Your Tongue, Out for Blood, and From the Ashes, are police procedurals, but they are also books about pressure, class, guilt, and the private damage people carry around. Readers who warm to Masson's work often seem to respond to that balance. The cases are tense and dark, but the people inside them still feel like people, not just pieces on a plot board.

Aberdeen matters a lot in that mix. Masson has said she has travelled widely and lived elsewhere, but always returned to her hometown, and she writes about it with the kind of detail that comes from knowing a place from the inside. In her fiction, Aberdeen is not just a backdrop. The granite streets, North Sea weather, oil money, and sharp gap between comfort and hardship all help shape the mood of the books.

Her second novel, Out for Blood, came much faster than the first, written in roughly six to eight months, which she has described as a shock after the slower build of her debut. Then came From the Ashes, which was longlisted for the McIlvanney Prize for Best Scottish Crime Novel of the Year in 2022. In 2026 she published I’ll Be Watching You, a standalone thriller that keeps the Aberdeen setting but shifts away from the police series into a darker story about surveillance, obsession, and revenge.

That move says something useful about her as a writer. She likes crime fiction, but she also likes asking why people do terrible things, and what happens before the headline moment. Deborah Masson builds her stories from work, place, and close observation, then follows them into the messier corners of human behaviour.
