Author bio
Deborah Garner grew up in California, and the sense of place in her fiction feels tied to that early life in the American West. She later studied in France, returned to the United States to attend UCLA, and built a writing life that moves between travel nonfiction, cozy mystery, and Christmas fiction.
Places seem to be the spark in almost everything she writes.
Before fiction took over, Garner tried a lot of different creative roads. After time in graduate school and teaching, she founded and ran a dance and performing arts center, designed clothing and accessories, and worked in corporate retail management. That mix of jobs helps explain why her books notice both people and practical details, from how a room feels to what is set on the table.
In the fall of 1999, she decided to hit the road as a travel writer and photographer, roaming America's back roads and small towns. She has kept doing that for years, documenting out-of-the-way places and the kinds of stops most travelers pass too quickly. You can feel that habit of looking closely all through her fiction, especially in the way she treats towns, diners, hotels, and roadside discoveries as characters in their own right.
That travel background fits especially well with her mystery series. In Above the Bridge, reporter Paige MacKenzie heads to Jackson Hole and gets pulled into a treasure legend. In The Moonglow Cafe and Three Silver Doves, Garner pairs western settings with old secrets, local history, and just enough romance to keep the stories warm without slowing the mystery. The cases matter, but so do the diners, hotels, mountain towns, and local lore around them.
She clearly likes towns with stories tucked under the floorboards.
Garner also writes lighter, more openly comforting holiday fiction. Mistletoe at Moonglow begins the Moonglow Christmas series in Timberton, Montana, where resident chef and artist Mist helps guests trade worry for hope through food, tradition, and a little holiday magic. The same fondness for food and place shows up in the Sadie Kramer books too, starting with A Flair for Chardonnay, where a stylish senior sleuth and her Yorkie, Coco, keep finding bodies in otherwise appealing destinations.
Then there are the standalones and extras. Cranberry Bluff turns an inherited bed-and-breakfast on the Northern California coast into the setting for a fresh-start story with secrets bubbling underneath, and Sweet Treats brings recipes from the Moonglow world onto the page. Even when the plots turn tense, the books stay readable and companionable. Across all of it, Garner returns to small towns, inns, cafes, travelers, artists, and people who are looking for either answers or a reset.
Her interests away from the page are easy to spot in the work too. She loves photography, hiking, and animal rescue, speaks five languages, and still seems drawn to hidden corners and back-road detours rather than the obvious stop on the map.
These days she divides her time between California and Wyoming, usually with two dogs and one more human along for the ride. It sounds a lot like the life you would expect from a writer who keeps sending her characters toward small towns, big skies, and the chance that a place might quietly change them.
