Author bio

Debbie Howells took a winding route to fiction. Before writing full time, she worked as long-haul cabin crew, trained as a pilot, qualified as a flying instructor, and later ran a wedding flower business.

Writing started on her days off, when she began putting stories on the page as a form of escape.

After leaving aviation, she started Country Flowers, her wedding flower business. It was during that period, in the middle of work and family life, that she began writing seriously. She self-published three women's fiction novels before changing direction and writing The Bones of You, her first psychological thriller. One of those early books, Wildflowers, was later republished as It All Started With You. The Bones of You sold at auction, became a Sunday Times bestseller, and was chosen for the Richard and Judy Book Club.

Readers who pick up The Bones of You usually see straight away what Howells does well. She likes quiet places, complicated families, buried hurt, and the moment when a life that looks settled starts to crack. Books like The Beauty of the End and The Vow keep that same emotional pull, but wrap it inside mysteries about missing people, broken trust, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive. They are suspense novels, but they are very much about people.

She has a knack for taking an ordinary-looking life and finding the fault line underneath it.

Her later thrillers pushed that interest even further. In Part of the Silence and The Death Of Her, memory, identity, and motherhood sit at the heart of the suspense. Her Sister's Lie, The Stepdaughter, and The House Sitter return to some of her favorite territory, villages, families, outsiders, and secrets that refuse to stay buried. Cornwall, country lanes, summer houses, closed communities, and uneasy domestic spaces all turn up in her work. Even when the plots are dark, the books are usually as interested in grief, guilt, and relationships as they are in the mystery itself.

She has also returned to women's fiction, and that side of her work leans into healing, friendship, and second chances without losing the emotional weight. The Life You Left Behind and The Shape Of Your Heart look hard at love after loss. The Last Days of You and Me and This Thing Called Love bring together people carrying sorrow, hope, illness, family burdens, or unfinished business. Then books like For One Moment With You and The Impossible Search for the Perfect Man show her lighter, warmer side, though she still likes to put her characters through a fair amount before they find their way.

Her background in floristry still feels close to the page. Flowers, gardens, weather, and changing seasons show up again and again, not as decoration, but as part of how her characters move through the world. The same goes for her love of rural and coastal settings, which often feel calm on the surface and deeply unsettled underneath. She now writes full time and lives in Sussex with her family and assorted animals.

What connects the whole bibliography is feeling. Whether she is writing a psychological thriller or a love story, Howells tends to stay close to people in the middle of loss, reinvention, or a hard truth. That mix of tension and tenderness is what keeps readers moving from one book to the next.
