Author bio
Deb Caletti was born in San Rafael, California, and spent much of her childhood moving from one Northern California town and school to another. She has said she was the kind of kid who always had a book close by, the one reading in the car by flashes of streetlight and hurrying back to her room to write stories.
She was a reader first.
That matters because Caletti often talks about books as both shelter and training. Stories gave her a place to hide, a place to rest, and a place to feel understood. Later she studied journalism at the University of Washington in Seattle, but she also describes herself as being taught by years of reading everything from Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle to Tess of the D’Urbervilles.
Her path to publication was not quick. Her second manuscript brought agent interest, but it took three more books, and a pile of rejections, before The Queen of Everything became the novel that sold. The next book, Honey, Baby, Sweetheart, went on to become a National Book Award finalist, and from there she built a career that moved between young adult and adult fiction.
And she kept going.
Readers who come to Caletti for the first time usually notice how easily she moves between tenderness and trouble. The Nature of Jade pairs a love story with panic disorder and the daily work of managing fear. A Heart in a Body in the World, which received a Printz Honor, follows Annabelle on a cross-country run after trauma, and turns motion into a way of thinking about survival.
She also likes putting young women in rooms, towns, or whole systems that do not see them clearly. In One Great Lie, a teen writer heads to Venice and starts pulling at the history of powerful men and buried women. In Plan A, a road trip to get an abortion becomes a story about choice, shame, and the conversations women pass down to one another. Even when the plots get tense, the books stay rooted in emotion, family, and the question of how to keep going.
Setting matters a lot in her work. Many of her books live in the Pacific Northwest, on islands, along the water, or in small towns with a little weather and mystery in the air. She long drew from her years in Issaquah, Washington, which became the model for the fictional Nine Mile Falls in several books, and she returns again and again to complicated parents, first love, secrecy, grief, and girls learning to trust their own judgment.
Her adult novels carry those same interests into older lives. He's Gone begins with a missing husband and turns inward, toward marriage, memory, and guilt. What's Become of Her brings romance and suspense together on an isolated island, while The Secrets She Keeps heads to a Nevada divorce ranch to look at love across generations.
Caletti now lives in Seattle with her family, after many years in Issaquah. She has written about swimming, hiking, collecting antiquarian books, and being a regular library person, the kind who still goes back week after week. That feels right. Her fiction may roam into danger, heartbreak, or big moral questions, but it usually starts in the same place her own story does, with curiosity, empathy, and somebody paying close attention.
