Deathborn begins with a strong academy-fantasy hook. On her eighteenth birthday, Elara Gray starts hearing the dead. She thinks she may be losing her mind. Instead, she gets an invitation to Greyveil Academy, a hidden school in the misty mountains where the barrier between life and death is dangerously thin.

That would be unsettling enough.

It gets worse when Elara learns what she is. Deathborn are not admired in this world. They are feared. Their gift lets them command or interact with the dead, which gives them real power but also puts them at the bottom of a brutal magical hierarchy. So Greyveil is not a safe haven. It is a place where Elara has to learn fast, stay useful, and survive students and institutions that already assume the worst about her.

This is one of Rice's darker school series. Necromancy, prophecy, dead things whispering in the margins, and the unstable veil between worlds all give it a heavier atmosphere than something like Oliver Blue or even Elemental Hall.

At the same time, it keeps the classic school-fantasy pleasures: rivalries, shifting alliances, growing powers, dangerous attraction, and the feeling that each new term reveals a deeper layer of the system.

If you like academy fantasy with necromancy, a heroine who starts from the bottom, and a world where power and prejudice are tightly linked, Deathborn has a strong premise and a clear tone from page one.
