Series background & context
The Death Fields is Lawson's post-apocalyptic series, and it wastes very little time getting its heroine into motion. Alexandra is not trained for the end of the world. She is a girl with plans, family, and a scientist father who leaves her with information that might matter more than almost anything else once the virus hits. In The Girl Who Shot First, that means crossing a shattered landscape where the infected are only one part of the problem.
The human survivors are not exactly comforting either.
What follows is a fast survival story that grows into something larger, with research facilities, hybrid threats, shifting alliances, and the slow uncovering of what caused the crisis in the first place. Alex changes across the books because the world gives her no other option. She keeps losing people, gaining responsibility, and learning just how many powerful forces want control of the future.
This is a series about endurance and escalation. If you like YA-flavored apocalypse fiction with road-trip tension, infected horror, and a heroine forced to become much tougher than she expected, Death Fields fits that brief well.
