Series background & context
Creature of Habit begins on a smaller, moodier note than some of Lawson's later fantasy worlds. The setting matters here. Asheville and the nearby mountains give the series a grounded, almost nocturnal feel, even when vampires take over the plot. A Vampire's Soul opens with Amelia Chase taking a job with the reclusive Grant Palmer and slowly realizing her strange, controlled employer is fighting monsters that are both external and deeply personal.
Grant is the heart of the opening arc.
He is polished by day, dangerous by night, and very clearly carrying old guilt. Amelia is pulled into that life through danger, attraction, and the sense that something predatory is closing in. Later books like A Vampire's Curse and A Vampire's Mate widen the emotional and supernatural stakes, while A Vampire's Seduction and A Vampire's Fate give other members of the world room to breathe.
These are not only vampire attack books. They are books about shame, protection, chosen bonds, and people trying to build some kind of future around very old violence. If you want paranormal romance with Appalachian atmosphere and a more personal scale, Creature of Habit is a good place to start.
