Author bio
Deanna Lynn Sletten grew up on the Southern California coast and moved to northern Minnesota as a teenager. That jump from beach life to farm country feels like the kind of contrast that would stay with a writer. She made her home in Minnesota, married, raised a family, and later used that strong sense of place in many of her books.
Writing had been in the background for a long time. She has said the impulse started young, with an unfinished childhood mystery, and later college English professors encouraged her to take writing seriously, even though she was majoring in accounting. The practical path was there, but so was the pull toward story, character, and the complicated turns ordinary lives can take.
Story won.
Sletten began writing novels when her first child was still a baby. She wrote in whatever scraps of time family life allowed, at home, in notebooks, and even while waiting in the minivan during school pickups and activities. Before her fiction found readers, she spent years writing nonfiction for parenting publications, local newspapers, blogs, and websites. That background shows in her novels, which are clear, direct, and very interested in the rhythms of everyday life.
She kept at it even when traditional publishing did not open the door. By the time self-publishing became a real option in 2011, she already had several manuscripts ready to go. Early books like Widow, Virgin, Whore, Memories, and Sara's Promise introduced the emotional territory she still likes best, second chances, family strain, grief, and love that arrives at awkward times.
As her career grew, so did her range. Some readers start with the sweet neighborhood romance of Walking Sam or the family mystery at the heart of Finding Libbie. Others come in through the historical novels, especially Miss Etta, The Ones We Leave Behind, The Secrets We Carry, or Mrs. Winchester's Biographer. She has also written the Rachel Emery mysteries, which bring the same focus on character to faster, twistier plots.
What ties those books together is not genre so much as temperament. Sletten tends to write about women and families under pressure, people carrying old secrets, and characters trying to rebuild a life after loss, betrayal, or a hard turn they never saw coming. Her settings matter too, lakeside neighborhoods, ranches, small towns, old houses, and pieces of the American past that still feel close enough to touch.
She keeps the emotions big and the language plain.
These days, Sletten still lives in northern Minnesota with her husband, and she often mentions the wooded trails, the lake, travel, and her Australian Shepherd when she talks about life away from the keyboard. That everyday rhythm fits her fiction. Even when she is writing about old Hollywood, the Wild West, or Sarah Winchester, she comes back to a familiar question, what do people do after life becomes something they never planned?
