Series background & context
The Deal books are thrillers built around a smart twist. Rupert Brett is not a career spy in the usual sense. He works in commercial property, understands how deals are shaped, and wants the kind of success that looks respectable from the outside. Then he discovers how much dirt can sit beneath a polished office floor. Blackmail, corruption, money laundering, and murder start creeping into the work, and before long Rupert is being pulled into covert jobs that are far beyond anything he expected.
In these books, a boardroom can be as dangerous as a back alley.
The series starts in late 1980s London, where status, bonuses, and insider knowledge drive the commercial property world. Rupert is ambitious, but he is also observant, and that makes him dangerous to the wrong people. Once he starts seeing too much, he becomes useful to people who prefer to work in the shadows. His day job opens doors. What waits behind those doors is where the real trouble begins.
As the books go on, the canvas gets wider. Fairfax takes Rupert from Britain into Argentina, the Irish Sea, Moscow, and other places where business interests and political interests overlap. These are not glamorous tourist stops. Each setting brings its own pressure point, recession, drugs, covert government work, market manipulation, or criminal networks with friends in respectable places. The series has a strong international streak, but it keeps its feet on the ground by making money and information the real battleground.
Rupert is not James Bond, and that helps.
He survives because he can think, improvise, and read people, not because he is untouchable. Fairfax keeps him human. Rupert worries, gets boxed in, trusts the wrong people, and often has to fight his way back from situations that look hopeless. Recurring allies, including the tough Chris Adams, add muscle and experience, but the real engine of the series is Rupert himself, learning that information can be every bit as dangerous as a gun.
That is the thread running through all four books. Information is currency, and almost everyone wants to buy it, hide it, or weaponize it. The tone is fast, suspicious, and a little hard-edged, with a strong interest in how greed changes people. If you like thrillers where seemingly ordinary work opens into something darker, the Deal series has a strong hook. Read from the beginning to watch Rupert Brett move from ambitious surveyor to reluctant operator in a world where every advantage has a price.
