He sees, hears, and feels things other people do not, and the series treats that ability as both useful and deeply unsettling. It gives him an edge, but it does not make his life easier. If anything, it leaves him more exposed, more isolated, and more likely to follow lines of thought that other officers would dismiss.

That is the hook, but the series is still built on solid detective work.

Beginning with Late Checkout, the books move through Manchester and the edges of northern England, from hotel rooms and city streets to Pennine villages, remote houses, and weather-beaten rural communities. Walters makes good use of that reach. One book may feel urban and pressured, another almost claustrophobic in the countryside, but they all share the sense that the ordinary world is only a thin layer over older fears, private damage, and things people would rather not say out loud.

Murrain himself is an unusual lead. He is not a swaggering genius, and the books do not ask you to admire him from a distance. He can seem awkward, intense, and hard to read. What makes him compelling is the way he keeps going even when his own gift unsettles him. The cases in Dark Corners, Snow Fallen, Stilled Voices, and Life Remains show that clearly. Missing children, snowbound murders, fake spiritualists, hospital deaths, and old institutional secrets all come at him through the same stressed, half intuitive, half methodical way of working.

The weirdness is there, but it never takes over the job.

That balance is the series' strength. These are not fantasy crime novels. The paranormal undertow adds mood, tension, and a different way of seeing, but the books remain interested in motive, evidence, teamwork, and the cost of being wrong. The people around Murrain matter too. Marie Donovan, the former undercover officer from Walters's earlier Manchester novels, is part of the wider picture, and the later books pay increasing attention to what the strain of these cases does to the team as a whole.

If you like procedurals that stay grounded while letting in a little unease, this is a good run to try. Late Checkout is the natural starting point, and the short collection Murrain's Truth works well as an extra alongside the main novels. Expect dark cases, strong atmosphere, and a detective who never gets to switch off.
