Author bio

Alex Walters writes crime fiction with a strong sense of place and a steady eye for how institutions really work. His books have ranged from Manchester to the Scottish Highlands, the Peak District, postwar East Anglia, and modern Mongolia, but they tend to share the same interest in pressure, loyalty, and the gap between official stories and messy human truth.

He was educated in Nottingham and at Cambridge University. Before fiction took center stage, he worked in management roles in the oil industry, broadcasting, and banking, then moved into management consultancy.

That background shows.

A large part of his consultancy work has been in the criminal justice world, including police, prisons, and probation, as well as public bodies in the UK and abroad. That helps explain why his novels often feel grounded in the daily mechanics of investigations. The detectives have bosses, paperwork, blind spots, local politics, and awkward professional histories. Even when the plots turn dark, they usually stay rooted in believable systems and human behavior.

He first published crime novels as Michael Walters. Those early Inspector Nergui books, beginning with The Shadow Walker, stood out because they were set in Mongolia, taking readers from Ulaanbaatar into the steppes and the Gobi while still working as hard-edged police procedurals. Later, under the Alex Walters name, he built a wider body of UK-set crime fiction, including the DI McKay, DCI Kenny Murrain, and Annie Delamere series.

If you pick up Candles and Roses, you meet one of his best-known investigators, Alec McKay, in the bleak atmosphere of the Black Isle. Late Checkout introduces Kenny Murrain, a detective whose strange instincts give the books a faint uncanny edge without tipping them into fantasy. Small Mercies shifts to the Peak District and shows Walters working on a broader social canvas, where murder cases rub up against extremism, public life, and old local tensions. Then Winterman proves he can move into historical crime just as comfortably, using the snowy East Anglian Fens of 1947 as more than just a backdrop.

He has written that a story often begins for him with an image, then gathers force through research and writing rather than from a rigid plan fixed in advance. That feels right for the books themselves. They tend to open with a strong situation, a body, a disappearance, a place that already feels uneasy, and then widen into something knottier and more layered than the opening suggests.

He likes damaged but workable people.

Across the different series, his detectives are rarely glamorous. They are stubborn, tired, observant, and often carrying losses they have not sorted out. Walters returns again and again to corruption, buried history, professional compromise, and the way private grief can seep into public decisions. Even his standalones, such as Human Assets and Nothing Left of Me, keep that same focus on people who are trying to function while the ground shifts under them.

After many years in Manchester, he now lives on the Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands with his wife Helen, occasional sons, and a variable number of cats. That move seems to suit the fiction. His recent books feel deeply at home in northern landscapes, coastal roads, bad weather, and small communities where everyone remembers more than they first say.
