DCI Andrew Fenwick Books in Order

The DCI Andrew Fenwick novels are Sussex-set police procedurals centered on a detective who is sharp, guarded, and unwilling to let a difficult case slide. Fenwick works in and around the fictional town of Hardlen, where quiet villages, local businesses, schools, and country roads can all conceal a long history of grudges or secrets.

He is joined by Sergeant Louise Nightingale, an ambitious and determined officer who grows into a major presence in the series. The series begins with Requiem Mass, in which Fenwick returns to investigative work and finds a link between current killings and a tragedy involving former school friends. Fatal Legacy moves into the pressure and deception surrounding a wealthy family firm. These early books establish the series' interest in what happens when status, money, and reputation get in the way of the truth.

Later installments put more weight on Nightingale's own story. In Grave Doubts, she is recovering from a traumatic operation when Fenwick suspects that the danger has not ended. Innocent Blood follows two investigations that gradually reveal deeper connections, while Dead of Winter sends the team after a missing boarding-school student in freezing weather. The crimes are serious, and some books deal with disturbing subjects, but the focus stays on the investigation and the people caught inside it.

The tone is tense and methodical rather than flashy. Corley gives the cases room to unfold through interviews, evidence, false leads, and the uneasy realization that an apparently settled answer may be wrong. Fenwick's intuition matters, but he still has to prove what he believes.

The novels work as individual mysteries, though reading them in order gives the best view of Fenwick and Nightingale's changing relationship and the personal consequences that carry forward.
