Series background & context

The Davie McCall books are Douglas Skelton at his grittiest. Davie is not a detective or a cop. He is a Glasgow hard man, shaped by years of abuse from his father and then by the violent rules of the city's underworld. From the start of Blood City, he carries a darkness that makes him dangerous to other people and uncomfortable in his own skin.

That darkness is what gives the series its pull. Davie can do terrible things, but he is never written as a simple thug. He has loyalties. He feels shame. He wants something cleaner than the life he has ended up living, even when he does not quite believe he deserves it. The result is a gangland series built around a man who keeps being pulled between brutality and the faint possibility of redemption.

Glasgow matters here as much as any character.

These books are set in a city where old criminal codes are breaking down and the drug trade is changing everything. Bosses who once saw themselves as men of rules are pushed aside or forced to adapt. Davie rises under the protection of Joe the Tailor, a crime figure with his own moral limits, but that shelter cannot last forever. Prison, family history, turf wars, betrayals and shifting loyalties keep forcing Davie to choose who he is and what he will do to survive.

Across Crow Bait, Devil's Knock and Open Wounds, the stakes get more personal. Davie faces the shadow of his father, the threat of gang war, and later the chance to do some good by digging into a possible miscarriage of justice. That does not make the books suddenly respectable or cosy. It just means the violence is tied to character rather than shock value.

These are hard books, but they have a bruised heart.

Expect fast, direct writing, strong supporting characters, moral grey from page one, and a sense that nobody gets out of this world clean. If you like crime fiction that treats gangland life seriously, and if you do not need your hero to be easy company, Davie McCall is the series to start with.
