Author bio
Alexander McCall Smith was born on August 24, 1948, in Bulawayo, in what was then Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. He grew up there, and the everyday rhythms of southern Africa never really left his imagination.
Before he was known for fiction, he trained as a lawyer and built an academic career.
He moved to Scotland as a young man to study law at the University of Edinburgh, and later completed a PhD there. Teaching followed, including time at Queen's University Belfast. Even when he was deep in legal work, he kept a storyteller's notebook close by.
In the early 1980s, he spent several years in Botswana, teaching law and helping to build up legal education there. That experience fed into scholarly writing as well, alongside a long-running interest in medical law and bioethics. Back in Scotland, he became Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh and served on ethics bodies in the UK and internationally.
And he kept writing, fast.
His first book was The White Hippo, a children's story published in 1980. More books for young readers followed, often short, funny, and slightly off-kilter, the kind of stories that treat kids as smart. Those early titles are also where you can see his fondness for clear sentences and quietly odd characters.
His big shift into adult fiction arrived with The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, set in Botswana and centered on Mma Precious Ramotswe, a private detective who solves problems through patience and common sense. Readers tend to come for the mysteries and stay for the kindness, the humor, and the feeling that people can muddle through and still do right by each other. From there, he built whole worlds in parallel, the Edinburgh ensemble of 44 Scotland Street, the philosophical sleuthing of The Sunday Philosophy Club novels, the London neighbors of the Corduroy Mansions books, and the academic farce of Portuguese Irregular Verbs. He also keeps experimenting with form, including linked stories, short novellas, and light nonfiction that borrows the tone of a chatty letter.
Across all of it, the stakes are usually personal rather than apocalyptic. He likes characters who pay attention, who notice the small things people say, and who try to be decent even when they're irritated. Edinburgh streets, Botswana back roads, and small communities that feel like they could be real are recurring settings.
McCall Smith lives in Edinburgh with his wife, Elizabeth, and they have two daughters. He is also a bassoon player and helped found the Really Terrible Orchestra, which tells you a lot about his sense of humor. He was appointed a CBE and later knighted, but he still writes as if he's talking to one reader at a time.
