The Darwen Arkwright books begin with displacement. Darwen is a Lancashire boy sent to live in Atlanta, where the school, the manners, and the whole shape of daily life feel wrong to him. Then, in a half-forgotten corner of a shopping mall, he finds Octavius Peregrine's strange mirror shop and learns that being out of place might be more useful than he thought.

From there the trilogy opens into Silbrica, a world beyond the mirrors that is equal parts wonder and menace. Silbrica has forests, strange beings, old powers, and monsters with sharp appetites, but it also has damage built into it. The place feels under pressure from the start. Darwen is not simply visiting a magical escape hatch. He is stepping into a world with its own wounds and its own politics.

Back in Atlanta, Hillside Academy gives the books their other stage. Darwen's friendships with Alexandra and Rik matter just as much as the fantasy material because the series is about figuring out who you can trust when nothing around you makes obvious sense. Stolen objects, strange bones, cryptic adults, and mirror-crossing dangers all keep colliding with ordinary school life in a way that makes both sides of the story stronger.

Darwen is brave, but never in the loud heroic way.

The trilogy grows well. Darwen Arkwright and the Peregrine Pact is about discovery and first contact with Silbrica. Darwen Arkwright and the Insidious Bleck pushes outward into a wider, more dangerous mission involving a creature that steals children. Darwen Arkwright and the School of Shadows goes deeper still, tying together the mirror world and the human one in ways that make the whole series feel planned rather than merely extended.

If the names sound familiar, that is because the trilogy was later reissued in the UK under the Beyond the Mirror titles, beginning with Monsters in the Mirror. But whichever set of titles you meet first, the appeal is the same. These are middle grade fantasy adventures with real momentum, excellent creature work, and a strong sense that loneliness, curiosity, and courage can all live inside the same kid.

Expect portals, peril, good friends, untrustworthy adults, and a world on the other side of the glass that is far more connected to our own than it first appears.
