Series background & context

At the center of this series is Darwen, a Lancashire boy who is sent to Atlanta and already feels out of place before the fantasy part even starts. Then he wanders into an odd mirror shop run by Octavius Peregrine and discovers that some mirrors do not reflect the world at all. They open into it.

That other world is Silbrica, and it is where the series really finds its shape. Silbrica is not a tidy fairyland. It is beautiful in places, but also damaged, hunted, and full of creatures that are either wondrous, alarming, or both at once. Darwen's ability to see through certain mirrors and pass beyond them turns him from lonely new kid into someone caught between worlds, which is exactly where the books want him.

The school story matters too. Darwen's friendships with Rik and Alexandra are not just side business while the fantasy happens elsewhere. Much of the charm of these books comes from the way school problems, jokes, suspicion, and loyalty keep colliding with very real danger from Silbrica. Hartley is good at making the ordinary parts of childhood feel important without ever letting the adventure slow down.

Across the series, the big tension is simple and effective. If Darwen can go through the mirror, other things can come back the same way. That is why the monsters matter, but it is also why the books keep asking bigger questions about power, damage, and responsibility. Silbrica is in trouble long before Darwen arrives, and the deeper he goes, the clearer it becomes that the two worlds are connected in ways no one has explained honestly.

The later books widen the scope. What starts with discovery becomes a larger struggle involving stolen children, hidden motives, and deeper journeys into Silbrica itself. The feeling of wonder stays, but the stakes grow darker and more complicated as Darwen and his friends learn how much has been kept from them.

The Beyond the Mirror editions are the UK retitled versions of the original Darwen Arkwright books, so they carry the same world and characters under a different banner. What to expect is clear enough either way, middle grade portal fantasy with real bite, strong friendships, memorable creatures, and the constant sense that every doorway works both ways.
