That makes the tone easy to pin down. This is fast, case-driven fantasy with a sour sense of humor and an antihero who is often smarter than he looks. If you like clean morals and noble chosen ones, this may not be your lane. If you like damaged leads, magical crime scenes, and a world where every favor seems to hide a trap, it has a lot to offer.

Even when the plot starts with one investigation, the story hints at larger designs underneath. Alex's past matters. The people who released him clearly want something. And because he is exactly the sort of man nobody should trust completely, every alliance comes with extra tension. That uneasy energy is really the point.
