Dark Runs Books in Order

This is J.A. Sutherland in a different register. Dark Runs keeps the space-opera bones, but pulls the action much closer to Earth and much closer to the ground. The ships are still there, but the feel is scrappier and angrier, built around prison systems, corporate power, and people who are valuable mainly because someone thinks they can be owned.

The first book, Running Start, throws Mason Guthrie into that reality fast. He is arrested, rushed through a sham process, and treated as disposable for the crime of fixing things in the place he lives. Rosa Fuentes understands the system better. When the two of them break out, along with Rosa's very capable AI, the series locks into its central question, what does freedom look like when the people chasing you can buy laws, ships, and whole lives?

The tone is quick, tense, and a little raw. There is humor, but it usually arrives under pressure. The AI adds spark, Rosa brings hard-earned realism, and Mason gives the series its sense of moral outrage. Together they make the books feel less like polished military adventure and more like a fast run through a future that has decided ordinary people are inventory.
