Dark River Books in Order

Dark River is the grimmest corner of Michael Richan's larger River universe. In the main series, the River is already a risky place, a hidden supernatural current that only certain people can enter. The Dark River is worse. It is the place inside that hidden world where most gifted people do not want to go, a realm marked by addiction, corruption, and the sense that staying too long will change you in ways that may not be reversible.

That warning is not just atmosphere.

The series follows Derick Hall, a retired cop who is unusual by River-universe standards because he is not gifted. He cannot move through this world the way Steven, Roy, or Deem do. Instead, he has found his own hard way in, and he turns that skill into a job, taking contracts to pull lost people back out. It is a smart setup because Derick is both insider and outsider. He knows enough to survive, but never enough to feel comfortable, and that tension gives the books a lean, wary energy.

The setting does a lot of heavy lifting. The Dark River is full of firestorms, grotesque creatures, infection, worms that can trap travelers there permanently, and towns ruled by cruel people who thrive in the chaos. The Dark River: A starts with what looks like a transport job, then quickly expands into a deeper look at the rules of this place. Later books widen the frame. Derick becomes hunted, unwillingly important, and eventually tangled in the politics of leadership, rebellion, and survival.

It gets stranger as it goes.

The Blood Gardener, Capricorn, Divertimento, and Malfunction 61 keep pushing the series into more dangerous territory. Derick ends up carrying responsibilities he never wanted, while A and crossover figures from elsewhere in the universe complicate every decision. The mysteries here are not cozy puzzles. They are questions about power, damage, loyalty, and whether a rotten system can be repaired without turning everyone involved into part of the rot.

If you like paranormal horror with a noir streak, this is probably the Michael Richan series to try after The River or The Downwinders. The books move fast, but they are not just action. They care about the cost of rescue, the moral mess of working for bad people to stop worse ones, and the pressure of leading when leadership itself can feel like a trap. Start with The Dark River: A and expect a dirtier, rougher, more openly hostile version of the world Richan builds elsewhere.
