Series background & context

Dark Horse Cowboys is the Garrett family's romantic suspense corner of June Faver's Texas world. The books are set around Langston, a north Texas ranch community where cattle, horses, family duty, and old grudges all matter. Each novel follows a different couple, but the Garrett ranch and the wider Garrett clan hold the series together.

The first book, Do or Die Cowboy, introduces Tyler Garrett, who is supposed to be heading to Dallas to chase a country music break. Instead, he crosses paths with Leah Benson and her daughter, and one detour changes everything. That setup tells you a lot about the series. These are cowboy romances, but they rarely stay quiet for long. Someone is in trouble, someone is carrying old damage, and the hero usually has to decide what home really means.

The family connection is the heart of the series. Tyler, Colt, and Beau Garrett each get their turn in the spotlight, and the books keep returning to the push and pull between independence and loyalty. In Hot Target Cowboy, Colt is the steady ranch son who finds himself protecting Misty Dalton when the problems around her start turning dangerous. In When to Call a Cowboy, Beau faces the kind of hometown return that brings back unfinished business, old feelings, and secrets that have not stayed buried.

Then Cowboy Christmas Homecoming widens the frame a bit through Zach Garrett, a former Army Ranger trying to figure out civilian life after war. That book adds a holiday feel, but it still fits the series because the emotional core stays the same. These stories care about wounded people finding steadier ground, and they like pairing that emotional thread with mystery, danger, or a threat that keeps pressing in from the edges.

Home is never simple in Langston.

The tone sits somewhere between contemporary western romance and small-town suspense. There are ranch chores, family scenes, dogs, horses, and sparks between strong-willed people, but there is also crime, fear, and the feeling that trouble can drive up the road at any minute. Faver keeps the books grounded in everyday Texas life, which helps the dramatic turns feel tied to place and family instead of dropped in from nowhere.

If you are wondering what to expect from the series as a whole, think protective cowboys, women with real problems, and a community that can be nosy, loyal, and lifesaving all at once. The books are linked by family and setting, so they are best in order, starting with Do or Die Cowboy. Read them for the romance, but stay for the Garretts, because they are what give the series its staying power.
