Author bio
Danielle L. Jensen grew up in Calgary, Alberta, and that city still sits at the center of her story. She was born and raised there, and unlike plenty of fantasy writers, she did not begin with a neat lifelong plan to publish novels. She was a serious reader, but writing came later.
Her first career was the practical one. Jensen earned a finance degree from the University of Calgary in 2003 and went to work in the oil and gas industry, which made a lot of sense for someone building a life in Calgary. It was stable, grown-up, and not especially close to trolls, shield maidens, or sea kingdoms.
Then a friend suggested she try writing a novel.
She started in 2006, discovered she loved the work, and kept going. Early attempts did not sell, and by her own account some of them were rough, but the important part was that fantasy kept sneaking onto the page no matter what she tried to write. By 2009 she was querying manuscripts and taking the idea of becoming an author seriously enough to reshape her life around it.
That meant another turn. Jensen went back to school to study English literature at Mount Royal University while working nights and squeezing writing into the gaps. The road to publication took years of drafting, revising, and waiting. The first novel she finished was started in 2007 and queried in 2009. Stolen Songbird, the book that finally opened the door, was written around 2010, led to representation in 2012, sold in 2013, and was published in 2014.
Stolen Songbird introduced readers to Cécile, Tristan, and the cursed underground world of Trollus, and it set the pattern for a lot of what Jensen does well. Her books tend to mix sharp romantic tension with politics, danger, and characters who are asked to choose between love and duty. The Malediction books, including Hidden Huntress and Warrior Witch, lean into magic, rebellion, and big feelings without losing sight of the people inside the plot.
Then came The Bridge Kingdom, the series that brought many adult fantasy romance readers to her work. Those novels turn on geography, trade routes, war, and betrayal more than spell-casting, which gives them a slightly different feel from her earlier books. Readers who like enemies-to-lovers romance with real political consequences usually end up here first, then keep going through The Traitor Queen, The Inadequate Heir, The Endless War, The Twisted Throne, and The Tempest Blade.
She has not stayed in one lane, which is part of the fun. Dark Shores and Dark Skies bring together sea travel, imperial conquest, gods, and multiple points of view, while A Fate Inked in Blood and A Curse Carved in Bone move into a Norse-inspired world of prophecy, blood oaths, and forbidden desire. Across all of it, Jensen likes pressure. Her characters are rarely allowed an easy answer, and that is a big reason readers keep turning pages.
These days, she is a #1 New York Times bestselling author whose novels are published internationally in twenty-three languages.
She still lives in Calgary, Alberta, with her family and guinea pigs. That feels fitting. Her career took some winding turns, but home never seems far from the picture.
