Dana Swift Books in Order

Dana Swift grew up in Texas and has been making up fantasy worlds since she was eleven. Books got to her early, so early that she has said she used to pretend she could read before she actually could. That mix of play, imagination, and stubbornness still feels like a good description of her work.

In fourth grade, her class had a dress-up day built around what they wanted to be when they grew up. Swift came as herself, put a pencil in her hair, and announced that she wanted to be a writer. She kept writing through high school and college, even when she was a little shy about saying that dream out loud.

At the University of Texas at Austin, she studied English and Advertising. She also fenced saber there, which gave her a real feel for timing, movement, and parrying. It also gave her a love story, she has said that she fell for her sparring partner, who later became her husband.

She kept the dream going.

That early wish turned into her debut novel, Cast in Firelight, published in 2021. The book introduced readers to Adraa and Jatin, two royal heirs in the world of Wickery whose arranged future marriage is complicated by rivalry, hidden identities, and a threat to their kingdoms. Readers who like quick banter, romantic tension, and fantasy with a clear sense of momentum tend to find a lot to enjoy there.

Swift returned to those characters in Bound by Firelight, which picks up after disaster hits Belwar and Adraa is blamed for it. The sequel leans harder into fallout, loyalty, rescue, and the cost of power, while keeping the same romantic pull between Adraa and Jatin. Together, the two books show what Swift does well, she likes big feelings, sharp dialogue, and plots that keep moving.

Then she turned to dragons.

Her 2026 novel When Dealing with Dragons shifts into a new setting, but it still sounds very much like a Dana Swift story. It follows copper-crafter Farren Walsh, who wants to become a dragon veterinarian, and James Murphy, a rival tied to a family known for exploiting dragons for their metal. The book mixes romance, class tension, secrecy, and dragon conservation, which tells you a lot about the kinds of conflicts Swift likes to build.

On her own site, Swift says her favorite themes are identity, love, death, and the messy relationships around all three. That tracks. Her books often center girls with strong opinions, boys who need a second look, and magical worlds where duty and desire keep crashing into each other. She also writes young adult romance with a clear point of view, and she has said she loves romance in YA fiction but not insta-love or love triangles.

These days, Swift lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband and their goldendoodle, Kala. She has said Kala's antics helped inspire the dragons in When Dealing with Dragons. When she is not reading, she spends time critiquing work in a local writing workshop, still doing the thing she picked for herself back in fourth grade.
