Author bio

Dana Fuller Ross is the shared pen name of two American storytellers, Noel B. Gerson and James Reasoner, who between them produced hundreds of novels about the making of the United States.

Noel Bertram Gerson was born in Chicago in 1914 and grew up steeped in newspapers, radio, and the history of his home city. He worked as a reporter and in broadcasting before turning full time to books, carrying a journalist’s instinct for pace and clear detail into his fiction.

Gerson became one of the most prolific historical novelists of his generation. Writing under his own name and a host of pseudonyms, he covered everything from colonial America and the Revolution to nineteenth century politics and shipboard adventures. As Dana Fuller Ross he created the original Wagons West novels, beginning with Independence! and continuing through titles like Nebraska!, Oregon! and Nevada!.

Those books follow wagon master Whip Holt, his family, and a growing cast of settlers as they push across the continent. Gerson liked to drop ordinary people into the middle of big turning points, so readers see treaties, gold rushes, and political intrigues from ground level rather than from the view of famous names.

He also enjoyed using recurring families. The Holts and Blakes reappear across eras, letting readers watch children and grandchildren wrestle with new frontiers, new wars, and new kinds of ambition. Alongside the westerns, he wrote biographies and stand alone novels, often about figures such as Sam Houston or Theodore Roosevelt, always with an eye for the human quirks behind the history.

James Reasoner picked up the Dana Fuller Ross name in the 1990s. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1953 and raised in the nearby town of Azle, he grew up on television westerns and paperback adventures, then studied at North Texas State University before working as a newspaper stringer.

Reasoner built a steady writing life around westerns, war stories, and historical series. Under his own name he is known for a ten volume Civil War saga, but as Dana Fuller Ross he returned to the Wagons West world. He wrote the Frontier and Empire prequel trilogies, beginning with Westward! and Honor!, and later added the twentieth century Holts novels such as The Oregon Legacy and Awakening.

His books tend to focus on working families, scouts, soldiers, and newspapermen who get pulled into events like the Lewis and Clark aftermath, the War of 1812, the Dakota blizzards, or the Spanish American War. The tone is straightforward and plot driven, with a lot of attention to geography, weather, and the small decisions that spiral into big consequences.

Together, under the Dana Fuller Ross byline, Gerson and Reasoner built a linked universe that starts with the first wagon train to Oregon and runs into the new century. Readers who enjoy long arcs, recurring characters, and a strong sense of place often find themselves staying with these books for years.
