D.I.E. Squadron mixes romantic suspense with a paranormal thread. The opening story follows Alex Brennan, an undercover DEA agent and former Marine who keeps brushing off the strange dreams and instincts that have started to rule his life.

Those dreams pull him to Three Churches, Maine, a coastal town with a lighthouse, a local curse, and more than a few secrets. There he meets Pru Maddox, whose family has long lived under the shadow of the Green Lady, a ghost story that feels less like folklore the longer Alex stays.

What makes this series interesting is the split focus. On one level, it is a romance between a skeptical operative and a woman who has learned to live with fear. On another, it opens the door to a wider team of former military men linked by unusual abilities and old loyalties.

That gives the book a bigger-world feel, even when most of the action stays close to the lighthouse and the small town around it. Readers get creepy atmosphere, disappearances, accidents that may not be accidents, and the steady question of whether the danger is human, supernatural, or both.

The tone is darker and moodier than Burrows's straight military suspense. There are still protective heroes, danger, and strong chemistry, but the setting does more work here. Fog, old grief, and whispered stories matter.
