Author bio
Courtney Milan is the pen name of Heidi Bond, a romance writer whose books range from Victorian England to the modern tech world. She grew up in Southern California and started writing young, but her route to publishing took a few lively detours through science, law, teaching, and programming.
Before romance novels became her full-time work, Milan earned a graduate degree in theoretical physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. She then went to law school at the University of Michigan, graduating summa cum laude, followed by several judicial clerkships and a period teaching law.
It is not the usual path to writing love stories.
But the ingredients show up all over her fiction. Her historical romances make room for people who are thinking hard about medicine, mathematics, inventions, newspapers, legal systems, and money, alongside the usual dangers of falling in love. Her characters often have practical problems to solve, and they rarely get to solve them by waiting for a duke to rescue them.
Her first full-length novel, Proof by Seduction, introduced a London fortune-teller and a scientifically minded marquess determined to expose her. It also set a pattern readers will recognize in later books: sharp banter, characters with secrets, and a real interest in the rules that shape ordinary lives. The Carhart novels that followed continued that thread, mixing romance with questions of trust, reputation, and responsibility.
Then came the interconnected Victorian romances of the Turner series and the Brothers Sinister series. In books such as Unveiled, The Duchess War, The Heiress Effect, and The Countess Conspiracy, Milan writes about people pushed to the edge of respectable society, including women protecting family members, scientists denied credit, reformers, and men carrying difficult histories. The love stories matter, but so do jobs, independence, friendship, and the choices people make when the world is unfair.
She also writes contemporary romance. The Cyclone books begin with Trade Me, in which a hardworking student and the billionaire heir to a technology company swap lives for a month. Hold Me brings together a driven scientist and an anonymous online friend who happens to be the person he cannot stand in real life. These novels keep Milan's interest in class, family pressure, ambition, and the gap between public assumptions and private reality.
Her later historical work includes the Worth Saga, a family story that begins after a treason scandal destroys the Worths' security, and the Wedgeford Trials books, set in a small Kent village with a long-running spring contest and a large Chinese community. The Duke Who Didn’t starts that latter series with childhood friends Chloe Fong and Jeremy Wentworth, whose hidden title is only one complication.
Milan's books have appeared on bestseller lists and received starred trade reviews. She now writes full-time, while also sending a weekly newsletter about tea, books, and whatever else has caught her attention.
The common thread is simple: people deserve a love story that takes their whole life seriously.
