Series background & context

The Court High series is the starting point for Eden O'Neill's entire Court Universe, a four book arc that follows one couple from their first collision through to the end of high school. It is set in Maywood Heights, a polished midwestern town built on old money and quiet corruption.

At the center is Windsor Preparatory Academy and the Court, an elite boys' club made up of Maywood Heights' most powerful heirs. Royal Prinze leads his friends Knight, Jax, and LJ as if they own the school, and most of the time they do. They control parties, punishments, and the social ladder, hiding real power games behind beautiful faces.

December Lindquist, the heroine of the series, arrives from California after her older sister Paige disappears. Moving in with the father who barely knows her, she enrolls at Windsor Prep to retrace Paige's steps and figure out why all contact suddenly stopped. The last thing she expects is that her sister's closest friend is the same arrogant boy who seems determined to make her first day a nightmare.

They The Pretty Stars introduces the slow burn, enemies to lovers bond between December and Royal, with light bullying, secret alliances, and a sharp focus on how it feels to be the outsider in an insular town. Illusions that May and Court Kept push both the romance and the mystery harder as Paige's death, a suspicious text, and a web of adults with something to hide come into focus.

Throughout the series, December shifts from prey to someone who can challenge the Court on its own turf. Royal goes from an untouchable golden boy to a hero wrestling with guilt, loyalty, and what he is willing to sacrifice to uncover the truth. Supporting characters like Ramses Mallick, Knight Reed, and the rest of the Court boys build the found family that later books will expand.

By the time you reach We the Pretty Stars, the stakes are much bigger than detention slips. There are multiple deaths in the town, competing ideas of justice, and a group of teenagers trying to stop their world from collapsing without losing each other in the process. The tone stays firmly in upper YA or early NA, with dark themes handled through the lens of first love, friendship, and grief.

For new readers, Court High offers a complete story about one couple that also lays the foundation for everything that comes later. If you want to watch the Court Universe grow from the very first secret to the sprawling, multi generational saga it becomes, this is where to start.
