An Unsuitable Job for a Woman

by PD James

1972

When her mentor Bernie Pryde takes his own life, twenty‑two‑year‑old Cordelia Gray inherits his shabby London detective agency and its debts. Her first major client asks her to investigate a Cambridge student’s apparent suicide, drawing her into a dangerous web of privilege, deception and suppressed scandal.

Series background & context

Cordelia Gray appears in just two novels, but she made a lasting mark on detective fiction. Introduced in An Unsuitable Job for a Woman (1972) and returning in The Skull Beneath the Skin (1982), she is a young private investigator running a shoestring agency in London at a time when a woman in that role was still treated as a curiosity.

When readers first meet her, Cordelia is in her early twenties, bright, stubborn and short of money. She has been working for Bernie Pryde, a disgraced former police officer, learning the trade on routine jobs. After Bernie’s suicide she unexpectedly inherits his debt‑ridden agency and his ageing office cat, and decides—out of loyalty, pride and sheer need—to keep the business going under her own name.

Her first major case takes her to Cambridge, where the only son of a prominent scientist has apparently hanged himself in a gardener’s cottage. Asked to find out why, Cordelia moves into the dead man’s rooms and begins to piece together his last weeks. She meets friends and enemies who doubt her competence, keeps her own counsel in a hostile environment and slowly realises that the “suicide” was carefully staged.

In the second book she is hired by a war‑hero baronet to accompany his actress wife, Clarissa Lisle, to Courcy Island off the Dorset coast, where Clarissa is to perform The Duchess of Malfi in a restored castle theatre. Anonymous death threats quoting her earlier roles suggest someone close to Clarissa wants her dead. Once on the island, Cordelia finds herself trapped in a classic closed‑circle mystery that also probes the costs of celebrity and old betrayals.

These novels blend traditional puzzle plotting with a darker, more introspective tone. Cordelia is brave but not invulnerable, and James is frank about how gender, class and money shape the risks she faces and the choices open to her. The stories share a universe with Adam Dalgliesh—he appears at the margins—but they remain very much Cordelia’s, focused on a solitary young woman testing how far integrity and intelligence can take her.

For readers who like amateur or semi‑professional detectives operating without the backing of a large force, the Cordelia Gray books form a compact, atmospheric mini‑series that still feels modern in its concerns.
