Series background & context
SC Stephens's Conversion series starts with Emma, a young woman whose life is basically on track until she runs into Teren Adams. Teren looks like the answer to a romance novel checklist, handsome, attentive, calm under pressure, but the hook here is his secret. He is not a traditional undead monster. He is only partly vampire, which lets the series play with fangs, speed, and blood while keeping one foot in the everyday world.
That odd balance is the point.
These books are paranormal romance, but they read like a family saga with vampire rules layered over the top. Conversion, Bloodlines, and Til Death follow Emma and Teren from first attraction into commitment, marriage plans, parenthood, and the harder questions that come with loving someone whose body and future do not work like anyone else's. The romance is central, but so are secrecy, sacrifice, and the pressure of building a life that was never supposed to be possible.
Stephens keeps the supernatural side close to ordinary routines. Emma has work, friends, and family. Teren can move through daylight and act human most of the time, which makes every hidden danger feel more personal, not less. Instead of turning the series into pure fantasy, that choice makes the stakes intimate. Every decision touches real relationships, and every secret has a cost.
Family drives the back half of the series. The Next Generation moves forward to twins Julian and Nika Adams, rare partial vampires who have spent their whole lives hiding what they are and trying to pass as normal. Nika wants the kind of all-in love she sees in her parents, especially once Hunter Evans enters her world. Julian is more tangled up, partly because he shares an empathic bond with his sister and would like, for once, to keep some feelings to himself.
From there, The Beast Within and Family is Forever keep expanding the Adams orbit. The books shift toward younger relationships, but they stay rooted in the same questions about loyalty, trust, and what family members owe one another when danger hits. Love stories matter here, but so does the sense that no one in this family gets to stand alone for long.
Family is the engine.
If you are wondering about tone, think emotional paranormal romance rather than horror. There are threats, powers, and moments of real risk, but the books care more about devotion, identity, and the problem of wanting a normal life when nothing about your situation is normal. It is a vampire series, yes, but one built around partnership, children, and the mess of staying close when the stakes keep getting stranger.
