Author bio

Constance O'Banyon is the pen name of Evelyn Gee, a Texas-born romance writer who built a long career in historical romance. She grew up in Texas, and that sense of place stayed with her. Many of her best-known books return to Texas landscapes, frontier towns, and characters trying to make a life in hard country.

She came to writing through two loves that fit together neatly, history and storytelling. In her author bio, she said it felt natural to combine them, and she often talked about how much she loved research. When she could, she liked to visit the places she was writing about so she could walk the land and get a feel for the setting.

That habit shows up on the page. Her novels move from the Civil War and postwar America to the Texas frontier, the American Revolution, Victorian Britain, Egypt, and Rome. Even when the stories lean big and emotional, the backdrop matters. The land, the danger, the travel, and the pull between duty and desire are usually part of the story, not just decoration.

She wrote a lot.

Across her career she published historical romances, contemporaries, and novellas, and public author bios say there were millions of copies of her books in print. She also wrote with fellow Texan Emma Merritt under the shared name Micah Leigh. In 1996, she received the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award, a plain but meaningful sign of how much work she had already put on the shelf.

A good place to see her range is Savage Autumn, a frontier romance that starts the Savage Seasons books, and Tykota's Woman, which pairs survival adventure with a love story stretched between two worlds. Readers who like her westerns often come for the danger and the travel, then stay for the stubborn heroines and guarded, capable heroes. Books like Heart of Texas and San Antonio Rose show the same pull toward Texas history, family pressure, and high-stakes romance.

She also liked bigger historical canvases. The Tausrat books, beginning with Lord of the Nile, move through ancient Egypt and Rome with hidden identities, royal bloodlines, and political danger in the background. The DeWinter's Song novels, including Song Of The Nightingale and Desert Song, shift to Britain and Egypt and lean into family honor, travel, and old secrets.

Her stories rarely sit still for long.

Whether the setting is a wagon trail, a pirate ship, a ranch, or Cleopatra's world, the same interests keep showing up. She liked characters caught between loyalties, women who have to improvise fast, and men shaped by duty, tribe, war, or family expectation. She also had a fondness for lost heirs, missing relatives, mistaken identities, and lovers who meet while on the run.

Public author biographies describe her as a native Texan who made her home in San Antonio with her husband, Jim, and their son, Jason. That detail feels fitting. Even when O'Banyon sent readers to Scotland, New Orleans, or ancient Alexandria, her books kept the directness and big-hearted sweep of a storyteller who never lost sight of home.
