Confederation Reborn is Bernard Schaffer's big space-opera playground. The setup is simple and strong: a once-powerful interstellar alliance has been battered, humbled, and left living in the long shadow of invasion. The old confidence is gone. The peacekeeping mission has curdled into survival, suspicion, and the question of whether the galaxy can rebuild before the next catastrophe arrives.

That wounded backdrop gives the series its shape.

The early Return Fire books throw readers into a revenge-tinged military mission after devastation on a massive scale. Confederation is no longer the comfortable center of the universe. It is trying to recover while enemies, secrets, and internal cracks keep pulling at the seams. From there, the series opens outward through different officers, ships, and linked adventures. Some entries lean harder into covert missions and command-level danger. Others, like the Captain Kirn stories, have more of a swashbuckling starship feel.

The recurring appeal is the mix of familiar and rough-edged. Schaffer clearly likes the bones of classic exploratory science fiction: mixed-species crews, highly classified vessels, officers under impossible orders, and the tension between idealism and hard necessity. But he also gives the universe a grittier independent pulse. Captains are scarred. Institutions are fraying. The old stories about noble service are still there, but they are told by people who have seen too much war to repeat them without qualification.

So this is not a calm future.

The books also have a serial, shared-world energy. Return Fire 1, Return Fire 2, and Return Fire 3 work like a launching platform, pushing the reader into the universe through momentum and conflict. A Brightly Flickering Flame and The Voyages of Captain Kirn expand the world by showing another angle on the same larger struggle. Even when the cast shifts, the through line remains clear: Confederation is trying to figure out what kind of civilization it still is when the age of easy certainty is over.

That makes the setting more important than any single villain. The real ongoing problem is instability. Every mission becomes a test of what this rebuilt order can survive, and what it is willing to become in order to survive it. If you like science fiction that balances battles with questions of command, loyalty, and institutional decay, there is a lot to grab onto here.

Start with Return Fire 1. It gives you the clearest entry into the post-collapse setting and the tone of the series. After that, moving through the rest in order works well, especially if you want to watch Schaffer widen the universe from a revenge mission into a broader saga about recovery, memory, and the dangerous work of trying to build something decent out of the wreckage.
