Author bio

Colleen Houck grew up in Tucson, Arizona, and writing was not her first plan. She was a big reader from the start, drawn to action, adventure, romance, and the kind of stories that open a door into another world. Before books took over her working life, she was headed in a very different direction, one that looked a lot more practical and a lot less magical.

She took community college and University of Arizona classes with the goal of becoming a teacher, but her path shifted toward American Sign Language. She worked as an ASL interpreter for 17 years, and that work also took her to California and Oregon. The long stretch in another career seems to matter here. Houck did not arrive as a teenage prodigy. She wrote after living a lot first.

The turning point came in 2008. After reading Twilight and learning more about Stephenie Meyer and J.K. Rowling, Houck had a simple thought: maybe ordinary people could write books too. She started Tiger's Curse the very next day and finished the manuscript in about eight months. It was a quick leap, but not a careless one. She had found the lane that let her mix romance, myth, monsters, travel, and big feelings in one place.

That one decision changed the shape of her career.

Houck first self-published Tiger's Curse and Tiger's Quest as ebooks in 2009. A few months later, sales jumped sharply, and that early momentum led to interest from publishers, an agent, and eventually a traditional deal. The tiger books went on to hit major bestseller lists and gave her a path into writing full time. Tiger's Curse introduced readers to Kelsey Hayes, the white tiger Ren, and the cursed prince world behind him. The books clicked with readers who wanted sweeping quests, a strong dose of romance, and mythology threaded through every obstacle.

She kept building that universe with Tiger's Voyage, Tiger's Destiny, Tiger's Promise, and Tiger's Dream, and later returned to it with Tiger's Tale and Tiger's Trek. Across those books, readers tend to come for the love triangle and stay for the globe-trotting adventures, magical trials, and ancient prophecies. Houck's other big series, Reawakened, shifts to Egyptian-inspired fantasy and follows Lily and the sun prince Amon through tombs, rituals, and cosmic danger. It scratches a similar itch, but with mummies instead of tigers.

She has also stepped outside her two main myth-heavy worlds. The Lantern's Ember gives The Legend of Sleepy Hollow a darker fantasy twist, full of witches, portals, and creatures from the Otherworld. Terraformer moves into science fiction, following a young woman on a colony mission to a distant planet. Even when the setting changes, Houck keeps coming back to the same things: high stakes, emotional loyalty, strange magic, and characters forced to grow up fast.

Mythology, adventure, and romance are the clear through lines.

These days, Houck lives in Salem, Oregon, with her husband and what she has described as a huge assortment of plush tigers. She has said she still enjoys chatting with one of her six siblings, watching plays, and shopping online when she is not writing. That mix feels about right for her books too. They are earnest, imaginative, busy in the best way, and happiest when everyday life suddenly collides with something ancient and impossible.
