Series background & context

Clan Kendrick is Vanessa Kelly's Scottish branch of her larger Regency world, and it leans happily into big family energy. The books follow the Kendrick brothers and the women who unsettle their plans, with most of the action tied to their Highland home and the wider orbit of Edinburgh and London society.

These are romances, but they are rarely quiet ones.

From The Highlander Who Protected Me onward, each story pairs a different Kendrick man with a heroine who arrives carrying trouble of her own. One woman is hiding a pregnancy and a violent former fiancΓ©. Another is returning from a failed convent life. Others are coping with scandal, widowhood, dangerous investigations, or family pressure to marry. Kelly uses those setups to keep the books moving, so there is usually a threat in the background, not just a courtship at center stage.

What makes the series work is the family itself. The Kendricks are loyal, nosy, funny, protective, and often far too ready to interfere in one another's lives. Nicholas Kendrick, the Earl of Arnprior, sits at the edge of the series as the older brother holding the estate together, while Royal, Logan, Graeme, Grant, Braden, and Kade each get their turn. They are not interchangeable heroes, either. One is a wounded veteran, another a widowed father, another a government agent, another a doctor, and another a musician who doubles as a spy.

Family is the real power source here.

Scotland matters in these books, too. The Highlands are not just a pretty backdrop for kilts and castles. Clan ties, estate duties, rough roads, city winters, and the pull between Scottish life and English society all shape the choices the characters make. A heroine from London or Ireland does not simply change locations when she heads north. She steps into a different social world, one with its own loyalties, habits, and risks.

If you like interconnected historical romance, this series has a very easy rhythm to sink into. Each book stands on its own, but reading in order lets the marriages, children, quarrels, and family jokes build over time. The result is a Regency series that feels both cozy and lively, with kisses in one chapter and kidnappers, thieves, or secrets in the next.
