Series background & context
The Chronicle of the Fallers serves as both a standalone adventure and a crucial expansion of Peter F. Hamilton’s massive Commonwealth Universe. Comprising The Abyss Beyond Dreams and Night Without Stars, this duology takes a step away from the star-spanning politics of the main saga to focus on a confined, claustrophobic struggle for survival. While it ties into the broader history of the Void, the story stands on its own, offering a mix of planetary romance, survival horror, and political revolution.
It takes place in a setting that long-time fans will recognize: the Void.
This artificial pocket universe has different laws of physics, rendering the Commonwealth’s advanced technology useless. Inside this strange anomaly sits the planet Bienvenido. The human population here is descended from a colony ship that crash-landed thousands of years ago. Unlike the post-scarcity utopia outside, life on Bienvenido is a constant, grinding battle. The society has regressed to an early industrial level, ruled by an authoritarian regime that uses the Void’s telepathic gifts to maintain strict control over the citizenry.
But the government isn't the biggest problem.
The planet is under siege by the Fallers. These alien predators rain down from the sky in biological pods, looking deceptively harmless until they hatch. Once active, they are terrifyingly efficient. A Faller doesn’t just kill a human; it digests them and takes their shape, retaining their memories and mimicking their behavior perfectly. This creates an atmosphere of relentless paranoia, as your neighbor or family member could be a monster in disguise. The constant threat has turned Bienvenido into a militarized state where survival justifies almost any oppression.
Into this closed system drops Nigel Sheldon.
One of the founders of the Commonwealth and a legendary figure in galactic history, Nigel enters the Void on a suicide mission. His goal is to find a way to destroy the anomaly from the inside before it expands enough to consume the entire galaxy. However, he quickly finds that his high-tech tools don't work as expected. Stripped of his usual advantages, he is forced to integrate into Bienvenido’s rigid society.
The story evolves from a survival tale into a complex game of espionage and revolution. Nigel’s arrival acts as a catalyst, disrupting the balance of power between the ruling elite and the downtrodden population. He has to navigate local politics, uncover the true nature of the Fallers, and locate the technology needed to complete his mission without exposing his true identity.
Hamilton uses this duology to answer long-standing questions about the origins of the Void. It blends the author's signature world-building with a tighter, more focused narrative that explores what happens when a high-tech mind is trapped in a low-tech world.
