Author bio

Christopher Cartwright grew up in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia, where bush tracks, rivers, and sandstone cliffs were part of everyday life. Reading did not come easily at first, and he was eight before books really clicked.

The turning point was a simple deal with his mum. She offered pocket money for every book he finished, and his stubborn streak did the rest. Before long he was racing through stories instead of avoiding them, and then trying to write his own.

At ten he produced his first full length effort, a 300 page adventure called The Day Tasmania Seceded. In his mind it was a big screen action epic. Friends and family mostly read it as comedy, but the experience planted the idea that he could actually finish a book.

A year or so later he tried again with Last Human, about the sole surviving sentient being in the universe who eventually discovers his reality is only a game. He liked the concept, but looking back he knew he did not yet have the tools to tell the story the way he imagined it.

After high school Cartwright was advised to get some life experience before committing to writing. He took a job as a hospital porter, moving patients and equipment through a major hospital and seeing real crisis and grief up close. That work pushed him toward paramedicine, and he completed a Bachelor of Paramedics at Charles Sturt University before spending more than a decade on the road in Australian cities and remote outback towns.

He balanced those long shifts with a love of adventure outside work. Trail bikes, canyoning, SCUBA diving, sailing, and even learning to fly a small Cessna all fed the sense of scale and danger that later shows up in his fiction. Those years gave him both the technical feel for emergencies and a steady, unhurried way of describing them.

In 2013, when his daughter Elise was born, late night feeds unexpectedly opened up quiet hours to write again. Over two years he drafted The Price of Retribution, a historical adventure about a diamond thief sent to the penal colony in New South Wales. The book proved to him that he could craft a story other people wanted to read.

After his son Matthew was born in 2015, Cartwright went part time as a paramedic and committed the rest of his energy to writing. The result was The Last Airship, the first Sam Reilly novel, which blended a lost World War II airship, a deadly secret cargo, and a modern treasure hunt across the globe.

From there the Sam Reilly series grew quickly. Books like The Mahogany Ship, Atlantis Stolen, Rogue Wave, Omega Deep, and The Third Temple mix maritime adventure, speculative science, ancient myths, and looming global threats. Readers return for the combination of fast pacing, puzzle solving, and a small core of characters who feel the cost of every decision.

More recently he has launched the Pax West novels, starting with Scorched Earth and Nothing To Lose, which shift from ocean adventure to black ops thriller while still asking the same questions about loyalty, power, and what people will do under pressure.

Cartwright now lives in Sydney with his wife Maricris and their two children. He writes full time, still draws on his paramedic background, and keeps finding new ways to send his characters into storms, ruins, and deep water in search of answers.
