Christine Trent Books in Order

Christine Trent writes historical fiction with a practical streak. Her heroines are often women with real jobs and hard-earned skills, a dollmaker, a cloth merchant, a Victorian undertaker, Florence Nightingale at work in a London hospital. That focus gives her books a grounded feel even when the stakes turn deadly.

She has said her love of books started when she was three and constantly asking to be read to. Her mother’s solution was simple, teach her to read for herself. Soon came a third-grade spelling bee win, a fourth-grade reading contest, and a lifelong habit of collecting books as well as reading them. She still talks about keeping her old Nancy Drew books and the copy of The Borrowers she won as a child.

Books were never a casual hobby for her.

Trent had been thinking about writing for years, but she began taking it seriously in 2003. She started attending workshops and conferences, and in 2006 she finished her first novel, The Queen’s Dollmaker. Another push came from reading historical novelist Rosalind Laker, then writing to her and beginning a friendship that eventually led to visits in the UK. That relationship gave Trent not just encouragement, but a model of the kind of historically rich storytelling she wanted to do.

The Queen’s Dollmaker introduced readers to one side of her work, immersive historical fiction built around unusual trades. It was followed by A Royal Likeness and By the King’s Design, novels that move through revolutionary France and Regency Britain while staying close to women making their own way. Readers who enjoy craft, material detail, and heroines with ambition usually find plenty to like in those books.

Then came the undertaker.

What began as a standalone novel, Lady of Ashes, became the series that many readers most closely associate with Trent. Violet’s world let her bring together Victorian funerary customs, London society, royal connections, and murder. Books like Stolen Remains and A Virtuous Death show what she does especially well, strong atmosphere, an unusual profession that feels fully researched, and history that seems lived in rather than pasted on.

She later turned to another real historical figure in No Cure for the Dead and A Murderous Malady, reimagining Florence Nightingale as a sharp-eyed investigator moving through hospitals, government circles, and cholera-stricken streets. Trent has said those books were partly a tribute to her mother, who had been a nurse. It fits. Again and again, her fiction returns to capable women doing difficult work under pressure.

In more recent years she has also written closer to home. The Heart of St. Mary’s County books, including St. Clements Bluff and Three Notch Safari, draw on the Southern Maryland region where she has lived for more than thirty years and which she plainly loves. Her books have also been translated into Turkish, Polish, and Czech, a quiet sign of how far those stories have traveled.

She has also described herself as a hybrid author, comfortable with both traditional publishing and self-publishing.

Now she writes from a home library with her husband, a doll collection, entirely too many fountain pens, and thousands of catalogued books. When she is not writing, she has said she is often scrapbooking, planning a trip to England, or haunting bookstores. Even when Trent changes eras or subgenres, the through line stays the same, she likes women with skills, history with texture, and stories where work matters.
