Christin Brecher Books in Order

Christin Brecher was born and raised in New York City, and two places sit at the heart of her fiction: Manhattan and Nantucket. She spent childhood summers on Nantucket, reading mysteries, riding bikes to the beach, and soaking up the island's fog, history, and old whaling atmosphere. Those two worlds, busy city and close-knit island, now shape the series she writes.

She studied art history, Italian, and theater at Connecticut College, then went on to Columbia Business School. Before she published fiction, she worked in television production at A&E, HBO, and PBS, and later moved into business development and marketing at Time Incorporated. That background fits her books in a quiet way. She likes strong settings, lively scenes, and people with real jobs and real pressure on them.

Writing was not her first career.

After years in publishing and years raising her children, she turned more seriously to fiction. She has described writing as something portable, a creative challenge she could carry through different chapters of life. Along the way she lived in London, Connecticut, and Massachusetts before returning to New York City, and the habit stuck. What began as a private practice slowly became a finished manuscript, then a second, and finally a debut novel.

That debut was Murder's No Votive Confidence.

With that book, Brecher introduced Stella Wright, a Nantucket candle maker whose shop, Wick & Flame, keeps placing her a little too close to trouble. Readers who enjoy Murder's No Votive Confidence, Murder Makes Scents, and 15 Minutes of Flame usually point to the same pleasures: an island setting that truly matters, a smart amateur sleuth, and a world built from candles, scent, local history, and community ties. Stella also has a maker's eye and a sharp nose, which gives the mysteries a tactile, grounded feel.

Brecher then shifted to Manhattan with Photo Finished and Mugshots of Manhattan. These books follow aspiring photographer Liv Spyers, a young New Yorker trying to build a career while juggling family, money, social ladders, and murder scenes she never meant to visit. The camera gives Brecher a fresh sleuthing tool. Liv notices posture, lighting, background details, and the small things other people miss. The city series also lets Brecher play with glamour, ambition, and the gap between how a night looks in a photograph and what was really happening just outside the frame.

Place is never just background in her books.

Again and again, Brecher writes about women with practical skills, strong curiosity, and work that brings them close to other people's lives. A candle maker knows what people want their celebrations and homes to feel like. A photographer sees the version of themselves people hope to show the world. In both series, she uses those everyday professions to get at questions of image, memory, class, ambition, and hidden motive, while still delivering the clean fun of a good whodunit.

She still lives in New York City, and she has said that the city continues to stir her imagination. Nantucket remains just as important to her work, especially its weather, history, and strong community feel. She is also a member of Sisters in Crime and Mystery Writers of America. Taken together, her books feel rooted in real affection for the places she knows best, whether that means a cobblestone island street or a polished Manhattan event where everything looks perfect until it suddenly doesn't.
