Series background & context

The Chloe Jackson series begins with grief and a promise. Chloe, a former Chicago librarian, heads to the Florida Panhandle after the death of her friend Boone, determined to help his grandmother Vivi Slidell with the Sea Glass Saloon in Emerald Cove. She expects a short stay and a clear task. Instead she lands in a town that quickly becomes complicated, dangerous, and very hard to leave.

Emerald Cove is a big part of the appeal. Harris uses white beaches, tourist traffic, fishing boats, back roads, and gulf water to shape the stories. The town looks relaxed from the outside, but money, land deals, old resentments, and local loyalties are always moving under the surface.

The bar is the center of everything.

At the Sea Glass Saloon, Chloe has to learn people fast. Vivi is sharp, stubborn, and much tougher than Chloe first expects. Joaquin helps steady the day-to-day chaos, and Rip Barnett gradually becomes an important part of Chloe's life. Around them is a mix of regulars, troublemakers, friends, and outsiders who all seem to know more than they say.

Each book takes that coastal setup and spins a different kind of mystery from it. From Beer to Eternity starts with a dead regular and Vivi under suspicion. A Time to Swill opens with a sailboat on a sandbar, a crying kitten, and a skeleton tied to an old disappearance. Three Shots to the Wind brings Chloe's Chicago ex to Florida just in time for his murder, and Rum and Choke mixes bar games, pirate lore, and a body found during a treasure hunt.

Chloe herself is part of what makes the series work. She brings a librarian's eye for detail into a world of bartenders, boaters, developers, and long-settled locals. Even with the beach setting, these are not soft-focus vacation stories. Chloe is often the outsider in the room, and that gives the series some bite as she figures out who deserves her trust and what kind of future she wants.

Harris keeps the tone breezy without making the danger feel fake. The books are cozy mysteries, but the motives usually come from money, family strain, resentment, or old secrets rather than cartoon villainy. If you like seaside settings, found family, and a heroine building a new life one messy step at a time, Chloe's world is easy to settle into.
