Sibling Assassins

by Lian Hearn

2020

Years later, warrior monk Arai Sunaomi is pulled between clan duty and the spirit world as he searches for his missing friend Masao. Joined by his Tribe cousins Kiyoko and Kichizo, the sibling assassins, he must face ghosts, pirates and a final Otori reckoning.

Series background & context

Children of the Otori returns to the same imagined archipelago as Tales of the Otori, but shifts the focus to the next generation growing up in the ruins of their parents' wars. The battles and betrayals described in The Harsh Cry of the Heron have left many children orphaned, including the sons of Arai Zenko and Hana, once sworn enemies of Takeo and Kaede.

At the centre of the series is Arai Sunaomi, a boy marked by conflicting legacies. He and his younger brother Chikara narrowly escape execution after their parents' treachery, saved only because their aunt Kaede intervenes. Sent to the mountain temple at Terayama as novice monks, they are told to renounce their old names and live quietly, far from court intrigue.

But the world of the Otori does not let its children stay hidden for long.

In Orphan Warriors Sunaomi discovers that his blood ties to the Tribe, inherited through his grandmother Muto Shizuka, give him gifts he barely understands. Strange visions and an ability to cross the boundary between the living and the dead draw him into contact with Hisao, the troubled ghostmaster who is Takeo's son, and with Saga Hideki, the ruthless general who now dominates the wider Eight Islands. As the clans manoeuvre for power, Sunaomi must decide where his loyalty lies, even though every choice risks betrayal.

Sibling Assassins follows Sunaomi into early adulthood. He has grown into a capable warrior on the verge of his coming of age, courted for adoption and political marriage by powerful lords. Yet he is still bound to his ghost lover Utahime, and to her brother Masao, heir to a disgraced clan and now a wanted man. Travelling across the islands in search of Masao, Sunaomi is joined by his Tribe cousins Kiyoko and Kichizo, the sibling assassins whose lethal talents and private motives collide with his hopes for peace.

Across the two novels, Children of the Otori weaves temple life, sea journeys, pirate havens and haunted battlefields into one long coming of age story. The tone balances adventure and spiritual unease, as Sunaomi moves between the human world and the spirit realm, between Otori loyalties and Tribe obligations. Longtime readers will recognise echoes of Takeo's dilemmas, while new readers can enter the saga through younger eyes and feel how the past shapes every step this new generation takes.
