Chelsea Bieker Books in Order

Chelsea Bieker was born in Fresno, California, in the San Joaquin Valley. Her earliest years were spent in Hawaii, where her father was working on Oahu, before her parents separated and she moved back to Fresno with her mother. The contrast between those two places, one lush and coastal, the other hot, flat, and agricultural, has stayed close to her work.

After her mother left, Bieker was raised mainly by her grandparents. Her grandfather, who helped establish Fresno State’s agriculture department, raised her from nine to seventeen and talked often about harvests and weather. That close knowledge of land and work later became part of the Central Valley settings that recur throughout her fiction.

Her route to novels ran through journalism first. Bieker earned a journalism degree at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, then moved to Portland in 2010 for Portland State University’s creative writing MFA, which she completed in 2012. She has spoken about turning to stories and language as a way to make sense of a difficult childhood.

Before her first book appeared, her fiction and essays were published in outlets including Granta, McSweeney’s, Catapult, Electric Literature, and Joyland. She received a Rona Jaffe Writers’ Award in 2018 and has also held a fellowship at MacDowell.

Her 2020 debut, Godshot, introduced readers to Lacey May, a fourteen-year-old girl in a drought-hit Central Valley town whose community falls under the influence of a charismatic pastor. It is a tense coming-of-age story about faith, family, girlhood, and the way women find help when the adults around them fail.

In 2022, Bieker published Heartbroke, her first story collection. Its characters move through the California Central Valley looking for love, money, escape, or a fresh start, often while making messy choices. The book won a California Book Award, and it shows how much range she can fit into a short story, from dark humor to real sorrow.

Her 2024 novel Madwoman shifts between present-day Portland and a childhood in Waikiki. It follows Clove, a mother trying hard to keep her past hidden until a letter from a California women’s prison threatens the life she has built. The book became a national bestseller and brings Bieker’s interest in motherhood, memory, violence, and survival into a more psychological story.

Place matters.

Across her books, Bieker returns to people living close to the edge, especially women and children dealing with abandonment, addiction, poverty, family damage, or controlling men. Her California is full of raisin farms, highways, small churches, dry fields, and stubborn hope. The stories can be unsettling, but they also make room for strange humor and unexpected care.

Bieker lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and children. Alongside writer Kimberly King Parsons, she also co-created The Fountain, a writing practice and learning community for people trying to build a steadier creative life.
