Author bio

Charlotte Abel was born in 1969 and grew up in Oklahoma. That is also where she met Pete, the man she would later follow to Boulder, Colorado.

Colorado stuck.

She has said that writing first felt real in high school, when some of her short stories and poems appeared in an anthology. Seeing her words in print gave her a jolt, and the idea of becoming a writer never quite went away. Years later, that early spark turned into a serious routine.

Her debut novel, Enchantment, began as a short story she wrote during Orson Scott Card's Literary Bootcamp in 2010. She expanded it, rewrote it, and kept at it until it became a full book. Around that same time, she described writing like a job, eight hours a day, six days a week, and sometimes much longer when she slipped away to the mountains.

The books that followed show the lane she likes best. Enchantment, Taken, and Finding Valor make up the core of her Channie series, a paranormal romance about a teenage mage whose family uproots her from the Ozarks to suburban Colorado. Readers who warm to those books usually come for the big feelings, the magical rules, and the way first love crashes headlong into danger.

Her settings are not random, either. The Ozarks and Colorado both matter in her fiction. The Channie books move between secluded mountain magic and suburban school life, while Sanctuary turns the Colorado wilderness into a place of danger, secrecy, and refuge. Even her contemporary work stays close to mountain towns and the people who live in them.

Then came Sanctuary, which leans older and rougher. River's Recruit starts with Jonathan McKnight, a veteran trying to outrun grief in the Colorado wilderness, and River, a young shapeshifter bound by the harsh laws of a hidden society. Later books such as River's Remorse, River's Revenge, Gabriel's Gift, and Rose's Rebel widen that setup into a larger story about pack politics, prophecy, loyalty, and love under pressure.

She also stepped into contemporary romance with Naked Edge, set in Eldorado Springs, Colorado. Even without magic, the story still feels like Charlotte Abel. It is about damaged people, second chances, and the hard work of trusting someone again when life has already knocked the wind out of you.

Mountains keep showing up for a reason.

Across her work, Abel returns to a few things again and again. She likes young or newly adult characters who are pulled between family expectations and their own hearts. She writes a lot about secrecy, belonging, and what it costs to break a rule that everyone around you treats as sacred. Her stories usually carry a strong romantic thread, but they also spend plenty of time on survival, identity, and the mess people make when fear gets mixed up with love.

Off the page, she has shared that she loves real life as much as paranormal romance. She and Pete raised three children, plus a lively rotation of pets that included ferrets, dogs, and plenty of hamsters. She has also talked about enjoying hiking, bicycling, and primitive archery, which helps explain why her books so often feel grounded in outdoor places rather than floating in generic fantasy space.

She writes love stories with dirt on their boots.
