The Charley's Ghost series starts with a problem most mystery heroines do not have. Amanda Randolph is trying to divorce her lying, cheating, scam artist husband when he gets murdered. That should simplify things. It does not. Amanda wakes up after a near-fatal motorcycle accident to learn she is the main suspect, and then Charley himself shows up in ghost form. Amanda is the kind of lead who keeps moving because she has to. She runs a motorcycle repair shop, has little patience for nonsense, and would much rather work with engines than with ghosts. Charley, on the other hand, is full of charm, half-truths, and bad decisions that keep spilling into the present. He may be dead, but the messes he made while alive are still causing trouble. That gives the series its main engine. Every mystery is also tangled up with Amanda's attempt to understand who Charley really was and whether she can ever be fully rid of him.

The setting helps a lot. These books unfold around Silver Creek, Texas, a place where old family ties, local politics, buried grudges, and small-town memory all matter. Amanda's cases are not abstract puzzles dropped from the sky. They grow out of family secrets, blackmail, kidnappings, mistaken identities, old murders, and people who thought the past would stay buried. The motorcycle shop gives the series a rougher, more grounded feel than a typical cozy, even while the ghost angle keeps things playful and strange.

Amanda also builds a useful, and often odd, circle around her. Detective Jake Daggett brings the romantic tension and some badly needed law enforcement help. Teresa, a psychic and medium, pushes the paranormal side further and becomes important as the series goes on. Other recurring characters, including Amanda's assistant Dawson, widen the world and make later books feel more connected. By the time you get to books like The Ex Who Conned a Psychic and The Ex Who Saw a Ghost, the series has settled into a rhythm where murder investigation, ghost trouble, and personal drama all feed one another.

The tone is a fun mix. It is funny, but not fluffy. Charley can be ridiculous, Amanda can be dry and blunt, and the dialogue often leans into that contrast. At the same time, the crimes themselves matter, and several books carry real danger. A ghost may be tagging along, but Amanda is still dealing with killers, grief, betrayal, and the kind of secrets that can wreck whole families.

If you like mysteries that mix small-town crime, paranormal complications, and a heroine who would absolutely prefer not to be haunted by her ex, Charley's Ghost gives you exactly that.
