Series background & context

The Change of Heart books are Denise Swanson's linked contemporary romances, and they lean into fresh starts, old hurts, and the idea that love sometimes shows up only after life has gone thoroughly off script. This is not one continuous couple story. Instead, the series follows a circle of friends whose lives overlap even as each book focuses on a different romance.

That setup gives the series a friendly, lived-in feel. The books share emotional history, small-town ties, and a sense that everyone is carrying around at least one thing they need to rethink. Sweet Girl Undone works as a prequel, setting up the world and one of the series' second-chance romances. After that, Good Girl Overboard, Lucky Girl Hits the Jackpot, and Smart Girl Swept Away each take a different woman into a different kind of upheaval.

One book uses a cruise ship and a broken engagement. Another throws a lottery win into the middle of a growing attraction. Another sends a successful but guarded writer back to the town and people she would rather avoid. The exact situations change, but the engine stays the same: smart women, real baggage, and men who do not make things simple.

These romances are spicier than Swanson's cozies, but they still feel like her work. She likes women with jobs, complicated families, stubborn streaks, and a need to rebuild. The dialogue is brisk, the attraction is clear, and the emotional conflict comes from who the characters already are, not just from contrived misunderstandings.

If you want interconnected romances you can read in order or dip into one at a time, this series works well for that. Start with Sweet Girl Undone if you want the earliest setup, or jump to Good Girl Overboard for the first full-length novel.
