Series background & context

Catnip & Cauldrons is where Autumn Jones Lake steps out of biker romance and into paranormal territory. These are shorter books, but they still carry the same interest in strong attraction, secret worlds, and people who have to decide who they can trust once ordinary life drops away.

The series begins with Onyx Night, when Onyx loses her parents and gets shoved into a reality she never knew existed. What starts as grief turns into discovery. She learns that the world is stranger than she thought, and that the truth about herself is stranger too. That opening gives the series its basic shape, romance mixed with hidden identity, magic, and the tension of entering a community that has its own rules.

Then the world expands.

Onyx Shadows takes Onyx and her wizard boyfriend, Cole, to Rome, where they meet other werecats trying to break away from old traditions. On paper, that sounds like freedom. In practice, it brings new suspicion, missing people, and the realization that not everyone who claims to be on the same side actually is. Feral Escape shifts some focus and follows Molly, a cat-shifter rescued from captivity by a guarded lynx-shifter named Ivan. Their story adds survival, recovery, and another look at how hard it can be to feel safe after trauma.

The tone is more fantastical than the Lost Kings books, but the emotional engine is familiar. Lake is still writing about damaged people, protective love interests, and relationships that develop under pressure. The difference is that the danger comes from shifter politics, magic, captivity, and old customs instead of club enemies and biker code.

They are quick reads, but they are not weightless.

Because the books are novellas, the pacing moves fast. You get straight into the hook, the attraction, and the trouble. That makes this series a good choice if you want a smaller commitment than Lost Kings MC but still want a connected mini-world with its own rules and recurring faces. If you like paranormal romance with werecats, wizards, forced traditions that need challenging, and a little bite alongside the heat, this is the lane.
