Cathy Pickens Books in Order

Cathy Pickens grew up in Walhalla, South Carolina, in a family with deep roots in the state. That small-town Carolina world, with its courthouse talk, church life, local legends, and people who know more than they say, stayed with her. Later, it would become the bedrock of both her fiction and her nonfiction.

She didn't come to writing by the shortest route.

Pickens studied financial management at Clemson University and earned her J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law. She worked as a trial attorney in complex civil litigation, then moved into higher education, teaching MBA students about law and ethics at Queens University of Charlotte and later serving as a university provost. Along the way she also spent time as a church organist and choir director, a dance coach, and a professor who cared a lot about how ideas get made.

Mystery had been in her reading life for years. She has pointed to Nancy Drew and Perry Mason as early influences, and when she finally turned seriously to fiction, she leaned into what she knew, legal pressure, human motive, and the feel of a Carolina town where everybody notices everybody else. That mix gave her a natural lane.

Her first novel, Southern Fried, won the 2003 St. Martin's Press/Malice Domestic Award for Best New Traditional Mystery before publication. It introduced attorney Avery Andrews, a lawyer who returns to small-town South Carolina after a blowup in the courtroom derails her career. Pickens followed it with Done Gone Wrong, Hog Wild, Hush My Mouth, and Can't Never Tell. Readers who click with these books tend to like the wry humor, the legal angle, and the way the town itself becomes part of the mystery.

Dacus, Avery's fictional hometown, is invented, but it sits close to Pickens's own home ground. She uses the wider shape of South Carolina too, from foothills to coast, so the setting never feels pasted on. The food, the speech, the manners, and the old grudges all matter.

Then real crime started pulling harder.

That side of her work includes Charleston Mysteries, which grew out of a walking-tour pamphlet, and later regional true crime books such as Charlotte True Crime Stories, True Crime Stories of Eastern North Carolina, Triangle True Crime Stories, and True Crime Stories of Upstate South Carolina. In interviews, Pickens has said she is less interested in gore than in story, motive, and the human lives around a crime. Her legal training helps her handle court records and forensic details, but what makes the books work is her eye for character and place.

The human side of crime matters to her off the page too. She has taught entrepreneurship and creative writing workshops in the Mecklenburg County Jail, worked with people reentering the community, and helped other writers think about creativity as a process rather than a lightning strike. She has also been active in the mystery world, serving with Sisters in Crime and Mystery Writers of America.

Pickens now lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. She continues to write crime fiction and true crime, teach workshops, and follow the question that seems to unite all her work, what really happened here, and what does that story tell us about the people involved?
